All businesses with one or more employees are required by law to have workers compensation insurance.

Sole proprietors, multiple-member LLC's, corporate officers and partnerships or household employees who work 26 hours or less per week may be considered exempt from workers compensation coverage.

This depends on whether or not you as the contractor are operating independently or if you employ others, and if you are completing work as an independent contractor or as an employee. Some of the major factors that are considered between independent contractors and employees are the extent to which the worker has unreimbursed visit expenses, the extent of the workers' investment, the extent to which the worker makes services available to the relevant market, how the employee is paid (weekly, monthly etc.), if the independent contractor usually makes a profit or loss on the job, if the employer provides employee-type benefits and permanent basis status.
