1. Does my Nevada business need Florida worker's Compensation Insurance?

Every individual, firm, voluntary association and private corporation, including any public service corporation, which has any person employed under a contract of hire needs coverage.

2. Are there any exemptions from Nevada workers' compensation insurance?

* Any person whose employment is both casual and not in the course of the trade, business, profession or occupation of his employer

* Any person engaged as a theatrical or stage performer or in an exhibition

* Musicians whose services are casual in nature and not lasting more than 2 consecutive days, and not recurring for the same employer, as in wedding receptions, private parties and similar miscellaneous engagements

* Individuals engaged in household services, farm, dairy, agricultural or horticultural
labor, or in stock or poultry raising

* Any person performing services as a voluntary ski patrolman who receives no remuneration for his services other than meals, lodging, or use of the ski tow or lift facilities

* Clergyman, rabbi or lay reader in the service of a church, or any person holding a position with respect to any other religion

* Real estate broker, broker-salesman or salesman licensed

3. Does Nevada workers compensation law have specific requirements for subcontractors/contractors and sole proprietors?

1. Coordinates all the work on an entire project
2. Obtains the contract to complete an entire project
3. Utilizes the services of any subcontractor or independent contractor
4. Issues payment to any contracted subcontractors or independent
contractors

If you meet any of the above criteria you are recognized as the "principle contractor", therefore, you are considered the employer of independent and sub-contractors for the purpose of being responsible for providing workers compensation insurance.

Sole proprietors and partners of a partnership may elect whether or not to carry workers' compensation insurance.

Employee Leasing and Staffing Companies

Using a PEO or staffing company to obtain your workers compensation may be a good alternative to purchasing your own workers compensation policy. Leasing companies handle your payroll, w-2 forms, unemployment and workers compensation claims. In many cases the down payment required to obtain a new workers compensation policy is high and many new businesses cannot afford the down payment. Another advantage, based on my experience, is that you will never get audited because you pay as you go for your coverage. We represent numerous leasing and staffing companies who in many cases offer deep discounts on your workers compensation coverage that you will not find from standard workers compensation insurance carriers.

USL&H & The Jones Act

We have excellent programs for specialty risks requiring this endorsement. Minimum premium for a USL&H endorsement usually start out at $2,500.00 plus the cost of the workers compensation insurance. If you are unsure and want to read either the USL&H or Jones Act I have provided helpful links below for you convenience.
