No, South Dakota does NOT require any employer to provide workers compensation insurance coverage.

2. In South Dakota is there any exemptions from carrying workers compensation insurance?

Since workers compensation insurance coverage is not required, all businesses may elect to be exempt.

3. Does South Dakota workers compensation law have specific requirements for subcontractors/contractors and sole proprietors?

Again, since workers compensation insurance is NOT required by law, there are no distinctions made for sole proprietors or independent contractors.
