DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA:

 

1.  Does my District of Columbia business need District of Columbia Worker’s Compensation Insurance? 

Any employer with 1 or more employees must provide workers’ compensation insurance.

 

2.  Who can exempt themselves from District of Columbia Workers’ Compensation Insurance?

The District of Columbia does not offer any exemptions based on employee size.

 

3.  Does District of Columbia workers’ compensation law have specific requirements for subcontractors/contractors and sole proprietors?

Employees of subcontractors in District of Columbia are recognized as the employees of the general contractor.  And, the general contractor is responsible for providing workers’ compensation insurance anytime there is a contractor/subcontractor relationship.  Even if any employees of the subcontractors are independent contractors.
